Barramundi trend in Thailand

You may have seen several websites offering Barramundi fishing in Fishing parks around Bangkok.

Some people asked us if Barra is a native of Thailand ; Yes Pla Kaphong is !

Actually you can find it from Pakistan to New Caledonia where the french speaking blokes call Barramundi Loup de mer tropical (tropical seabass).

Barramundi is a first cousin of the Nile Perch looks a lot like a Snook and very often jumps like a Baby Tarpon.

Barra take flies and we have a bunch of them waiting for you.

Looking for several days in the jungle?

Let's go to Ciao Lan in Surat Thani province (700 km from Bangkok, between Koh Samui, Hat Khao Lak and Phuket)
That very scenic lake with it fjords and creeks is often compares to Guillin in China. The lake is called Rajjaprabha or Ciao Lan and is part of the Khao Sok national park.
There are huge Snakeheads, jungle perch, panfish and even masheere carp. The lodge on raft is comfortable but remote, access only by motorized pirogues.

For more details look at our Saltwater or Jungle section.

Jungle perch is Kasoop

There is two sort of kasoop:
Kasoop tchoot is spotted and grow up to three pound maximum. It is found in central and northern Thailand
Kasoop kit can grow up to twenty pound but usually a four pound fish is already a big fish. It is found throughout Thailand even in Malaysia where it is referred as Sebarau.

Kasoop is our principal target while flyfishing, they will readily take good presented flies while sight casting or urge themselves to strike weighted flies when fishing with sinking lines.

Kasoop like to stay in schools however big specimens are often solitary.
Their habitat range from lowland marsh to mountain rivers. They like to settle around structures and are often found near stream inlets where the currents may carry preys. They eat baitfish and small batrachians. We even saw -in Kanchanaburi- the golden robe of a big Kasoop smacking a Kingfisher while the latest was diving for a meal. (Following that incident we created a Kingfisher popper)

Kasoop? Kind of super predator!

More seriously, from our experience, a box of small Smallmouth bass flies comprising small poppers and a 7 weight rod plus floating and intermediate lines is perfect for Kassop tchoot and an assortment of medium to big shiny weighted flies with a 9 weight rod is an advantage for Kassop kit in deep lakes.

While practicing light tackle, small spoons and spinners is o.k. for Kasoop tchoot, but flyfishing is more productive for this specie. For Kasoop kit, a stout rod up to 80g is welcome as you would throw big spoons and proppellers lures and you could have strike from Snakeheads.

Jungle perch are great fun on poppers and all "Small mouth bass" surface flies too!

Spotted jungle perch (kasoop tchoot) caught in Nakorn Ratchasima, for them a 7 weight rod and line combination is perfect!

A Real Trophy

Here in Thailand the Pla Shado or Giant snakehead fish has a legendary strength .
We are speaking about one of nature’s mistake, a fish that should not be found in freshwater,
in fact his nickname in Thai is: “chalam nam tcheud” meaning: ”freshwater shark”.
What about his lifestyle?
Breaks rods, stretches hooks, cuts 40lbs braided wires and finally tries to bite you when practicing catch and release you take the hook off his mouth.
Powerful caudal and dorsal fins allow a mouth fully equipped to slash his preys on the strike.

The Giant snakehead attack is breath taking. When caught, he will dive deeply and rush to the nearest weedy spot then you will need all your skills to boat him.

Those qualities makes him the sport fish most search after in South east Asia.

Fly fishing for Giant Snakehead is not an easy game. Caught only by few fly fishers from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand
the fish own the reputation of almost impossible to catch on the fly.
Why?
Because, sight casting is difficult as the fish like to ambush in deep water among weeds waiting for fish to pass at his level or other preys on the surface of water.
Streamers and others baitfish patterns are difficult to bring into play considering the dense vegetation.
Therefore the use of poppers looks appropriate but the Giant Snakehead is very smart and most of the time he will follow the popper for few feet without striking it.

We know that the fish have strong sense of smell and are often caught with chicken intestine or baby mice.
Most of our catches happened on early morning and late afternoon when the weather was cooler and in low light conditions.
During spawning Giant snakeheads form couples to guard the nest then fingerlings. At this time of the year, for the period of the monsoon
(June to August), Giant Snakeheads are very aggressive and provide a great opportunity for fly fishermen to encounter the stunning predator.

You should bring:
A 10 to 12 weight outfit with warm water lines ranging from floating to deep sinking.
-All your retrieves with you: single hand, both hands, rod under arm, between legs.
-Good mood, patience, persistence, sense of humour and a photo camera.

For light tackle:
95 percent of the fishing with light tackle (rods up to 80g) is surface action with propeller lures. Those wood made, hand made, Thai made lures are surprisingly weed free, they display bright colors and a big propeller on the front, they are retrieved at high speed. After several runs on the same spot they get the fish so mad that the predator becoming a prey has no choice but to strike the lure (with a rare vehemence) .

This kind of fishing is great fun and very productive too.

Fly fishing for Giant Snakehead should be reserved to experienced fly fishermen willing to catch a fish of exception and to spend the time for it.

Lack of enthusiasm?
Keep in mind that there are far less Giant Snakehead caught on the fly than Permit!
